Terracotta jewellery and lithographs are making inroads into the fashion and art segment in the Indian market. Retail real estate is witnessing emergence of high street stores to meet the needs of the neighbourhood shopper. This is bound to give competition to the malls.

Lithographs are art too

Maneka Gandhi is actively supporting oleographs as an art commodity.

Lithos — ink prints taken off a drawing on limestone, and hence limited to very few numbers, sometimes hand-tinted for “original” effect — were created both for purposes of printing as well as for artists to preserve and pass on “copies” of their works to collectors or to create records.

This year, her show of lithographs at Intercontinental, The Grand in New Delhi (August 10-12) puts together 3,000-plus works.

Jewellery from clay

Jharkhand is trying to creat a niche for itself in the field of terracota jewellery and pottery.

The initiative by Adhar Mahila Udyog Swavlambi Samiti (AMUSS), an NGO, to create designer bangles, necklaces, rings as well as pottery by involving women as this predominantly tribal state is yielding results and providing young women a source of income.

Will the high street stores live it up with malls?

Retail infrastructure is happening.

Flagship stores on high streets are among the desired retail formats and will be competition to the malls.

Retailers are targeting the brand conscious yuppies of the city, by bringing their favourite brand in their neighbourhood. Brands like Nike, Adidas, United Colours of Benneton, FabIndia, Crossword, Puma and Samsonite have hit the suburban areas. streets like 100 ft road in Indiranagar, Lavelle road, 11th main in Jayanagar 4th block and 80 ft road in Koramangala, Marthahalli have now overhauled into high streets with branded stores

Chandigarh becomes India’s first smoke-free city

Chandigarh has become the first smoke-free city in India as provisions of the Central Tobacco Control Act were implemented in all parts of the Union Territory from July 15. Smoking cigarette or bidi or any form of tobacco at any public place is an offence.

Luxury marketers come together to target the seriously rich Indian better.

The Indiluxe Retail Council of India (IRCI) is a recent initiative by group of lead fashion retailers.

Earlier the World Luxury Council started operations in India but was not very successful. On the other hand, the Luxury Marketing Council (LMC), the US-originated platform for more than 675 major international luxury goods and services companies, is doing well.
