Chill-Out In Jest
Bill: Mom, are you sure you wanna fly to India for a hip surgery? Isn’t it ‘a third world’ country?
Mom: Sonny, call India a third world country if you will, but the surgery in India will cost me less than ‘a third’ of what it will cost me here in the US.

Medical tourism Q&A
Q. If I plan to visit India for healthcare how do I select the best hospital?
A. To start with you can first consider Joint Commission International (JCI) Accredited Hospitals so that you are sure that international quality standards are met. The JCI is the largest accreditor of health care organizations worldwide and surveys nearly 20,000 health care programs through a voluntary accreditation process. For the past 75 years JCI is dedicated to improve the safety and quality of care in the international community through the provision of education and consultation services and international accreditation.

Since medical tourism is a recent trend, many other hospitals that offer quality health care at affordable prices may not be accredited yet.

Soaring healthcare costs and prolonged waiting periods for medical procedures in industrialized nations are drawing more and more attention to India, Thailand, Singapore or several other countries that offer quality medical care at a low cost.
India is currently a hot medical tourism hub. State of the art equipment, technological advances, qualified medical professionals, medical care at par with developed nations, personalized patient care and a blend of modern and traditional medicine has made India conspicuous on the global medical tourism map.
Introduction of ‘medical visas’ for medical tourists to avoid travel delays and several tax-rebates and incentives to hospitals and tour operators by the government has placed a seal of political approval on medical tourism in India.
Health care providers, the hospitality sector and tour operators have capitalized on the trend and now offer several health care packages at discounted prices for prospective medical tourists.
Despite stumbling blocks like a crumbling infrastructure and dismal public health care system, medical tourism in India is becoming extremely popular worldwide.

American ‘Medical Refugees’
in India
Medical tourism heralds the birth of a new breed of refugees- “Medical Refugees” as the New England Journal of Medicine(NEJM) calls them. The article in NEJM throws light on the plight of seriously ill Americans who seek treatment in low wage countries. “These patients are not ‘medical tourists’ seeking low-cost aesthetic enhancement but middle-income Americans who need life saving surgeries and want to evade impoverishment by succumbing to expensive healthcare options in America”
This American trend of “off-shoring” of life saving treatments can trace its roots to sky-rocketing health care costs and insurance premiums beyond the reach of low and middle-income Americans.
American physicians who may be concerned about this growing trend, can either condemn and attempt to restrict it or actively support the trend while focusing on the betterment of local health care delivery systems as the NEJM article suggests.
