Editorial

The spotlight in this issue is very much on niche travel segments – and there are options aplenty for the travel-weary explorer to choose from.

If going on a cruise was exciting to some while temple tours snagged others, picture the exotic. Eco-tourism is in with tented accommodation to protect fragile eco systems in some destinations as is soft adventure tourism. Only it is now politically correct to call it “activity based tours” or “experiential tours”.

For those that demand the more exotic options, here are the choices - make a bar of chocolate in a Swiss chocolate factory, or visit France’s famed wineries to make some wine and taste some too. Closer home, stroll around the coffee estates in Coorg, sample fresh coffee made from beans that you roasted and powdered or….hold your breath….take a champagne shower and follow it up with “wine treatment” in a Nashik spa! There is para-gliding, river rafting, under-water walks and rose petal baths for those that seek that little more …and of course, are willing to pay for it.

After all that exotic fare, the upsurge in inbound as well as outbound incentive travel might seem anti-climatic. But the numbers show that this is a segment unwilling to wait in the wings any longer – its soon going to grab centre stage.

India features big on the global aviation scene - Cathay Pacific has moved its regional base to India, while several South-east Asian low cost airlines are entering the south Indian market. Closer home, the Indian Railways has finally taken a cue from the airlines and issued frequent travellers cards and online ticketing. Rajasthan is soon to launch the second ‘palace on wheels’ which will traverse only the desert land - cruising finally takes off in India.

A clear view of Mt. Kanchenjunga and your trip to Kalimpong is worth the effort. The quaint, old British hill station still has some interesting walks and Buddhist monasteries to visit. For those rushed for time, Taj Mahal during monsoons should be inspiring.
