Editorial
Our foray into the tourism sector taught us that there is huge potential for round-the-year tourism in India. The numbers, however simply don’t add up to the true potential..
Ask the irritable tour operator or the disappointed tourist and you will have a list of woes long enough to write a book. There are issues with information to infrastructure, and everything else in between. The roads could do with fewer potholes, towns could do with more roads, hotel and airline services could be better, the trains could be on time, and so on.
Ever the optimists, we look at this as an opportunity. For the most part, service delivery in India could do with a facelift. But a hefty dose of pragmatism also tells us that local governments and the centre need to realise what the country is losing out on with each day that is spent deliberating, but rarely implementing, the recommendations sent in by several committees and sub-committees on tourism in India.
It’s a sobering thought, but hey, things can only get better with tourism going online. And it’s a cheering thought that neither riots nor soaring temperatures could do much dampen the enthusiasm of tourists to Jaipur.
