Editorial

On 15th August 2007, India celebrated her 60th Independent year with more than a billion smiles, as the world watched her grow steadily towards becoming the third largest economy!!

It indeed has been a roller coaster ride since 1947. While the first four decades witnessed a quiet journey, inching towards a better India, it gained real momentum in the last two decades. Liberalization and reforms opened roads for our economic growth. What made the real difference was that we took a paradigm shift from thinking small to thinking BIG. Indian talent and favorable demographic factors encouraged investments to India and outsourcing became India’s forte.

While on one hand outsourcing companies like TCS, Wipro and Infosys have earned acclaim worldwide; cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad have become a hub for incubating technology start-ups. More and more entrepreneurs prefer to start their ventures in India and take advantage of the available talent pool along with lower start-up costs.

The venture capital activity for India start-ups has increased substantially. India’s emerging favorable environment for start-ups coupled with unique opportunities in R&D and engineering sectors has made it one of the ‘most favored’ destinations for VC investors. The increased penetration of internet and mobile phones has opened doors of immense opportunities for start-ups in niche markets. Our special feature highlights the growth prospects of start-ups in various niche segments of the Indian telecom sector.

We, as a nation, are striving to build better infrastructure support and bring in more reforms to build a favorable system for the growing domestic market and the emerging entrepreneurial ecosystem. Nurturing and developing our basic institutions will further help us to work our billion plus population to our advantage and achieve complete economic independence.
