Support Industries

The slowdown in real estate prices across the country has retailers sighing with relief as rentals stabilize after 2 years of steep increase. Retail media is growing, as are other support functions like flexi-finance, RFID technology or intelligent trolleys to help shoppers relieve some of the stress that plentiful choice has created.

Editorial

Irrespective of the findings of the much-awaited ICRIER study, it is very clear that organized retailers would benefit from collaboration with the kirana stores. Vishal Retail for instance, plans to work with the kirana stores to take on the might of the bigger organized retailers.

While India ranked a disappointing 44th in a survey of retail destinations (largely due to the low per capita and strict FDI norms), corporate interest in India’s retail sector is high, with investments flowing in.

Meanwhile, retailers continue to grapple with high rentals, heavy competition and shrinkage – a euphemism if there ever was one for good old theft.

Big players - Plans and Investments

Expansion galore in retail this month, with retailers announcing plans for hypermarkets, town centres, exclusive outlets and more. Two interesting trends to note – a relatively smaller retailer leverages kirana stores to take on the bigger players, and Wal-Mart learns about the Indian market from long time partner P&G, an India veteran.

  Rural Marketing

This month saw some serious attempts at improving the quality and the focus on rural marketing initiatives. DCM Sriram’s Hariyali Kisan Bazaar experienced early success while the Future Group is upping its stake in Godrej Aadhar with a view to scale it up like ITC’s e-choupal.

Shrinkage in retail outlets continues to worry retailers. Two contrasting articles back to back on how interest in malls is ebbing, even as another report predicts 328 malls in India by 2010. Even though India ranks a not-so-great 44th as a global retail destination on account of its low per capita income and FDI restrictions, Corporate India is certainly betting on retail with a slew of investment plans being announced.
