Editorial
Inflation and rising rentals were familiar refrains – add terror strikes and one wonders what keeps the retailers going. It’s the promise of a bright future – and the numbers bear this out. Retailers from afar and near are set to woo all segments of the Indian population – the high end luxury market is as revved up as the discount retail segment. Women’s wear, kids wear, jewellery, footwear and mobile phones – the list of happening segments is endless.
Malls continue to be dogged by poor conversion rates, while retailers back off as rentals continue to soar. Long lease terms and lock-in periods do not spell has them balking too. On the supply side, increasing input costs and a global cash crunch has delayed several big projects. Rents may stabilize but a drop in current rates might not happen too soon.
Interestingly, many retailers are also moving towards the discount model, for the thrifty Indian buyer always loves a bargain. With the onset of the festive season with Raksha Bandhan, shoppers can look forward to some mega sales and great entertainment.

General Trends & Information |

Lots of mall space lying vacant, even as there is a shortage of real estate for retail – a paradox of scarcity amidst plenty. Clustering of malls in one area, say the city’s commercial district or high street, which in turn splits the footfalls and revenue, could be one of the reasons for this situation. Inflation plus demand has pushed up rentals making retail space dearer.
