Pharma Retail
As the big players zoomed in on pharma retail, the small retailers planned their own strategies. Not as glamorous as apparel perhaps, but health & wellness is a very strong platform for retailers – big and small.

e-Commerce
2007 also marked a significant, if subdued, uptrend in e-commerce. The buzz is quieter only in comparison to the roar in the 1990s, because this time e-retailers are making sure they get one step right before they take the next.

Editorial
In the book ‘The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy’, an alien calls himself Ford Prefect to blend in with what to him seems the predominant life form on Earth. If he were to land in India anytime in late 2008 – it might be a retail outlet or…the Nano, Tata’s one-lakh car, as some of its detractors claim. We would prefer to leave the debate on the Nano to experts, and will comment on our area of interest - the roll-out planned by retail majors in 2008.
Most players are planning on increasing their number of stores, there are several international brands planning India forays in 2008 and one study indicates that the number of malls would go up from 158 to a whopping 600 by 2010.
Amidst the fears and protests over organized retail and rising rentals, there are some positives too. There are murmurs that the “FDI in retail” debate would tend to favour opening up of the sector this year. Starbucks, Wal-Mart and Carrefour will be making their India forays in 2008. A host of international brands, predominantly from glamorous segments like fashion, apparel, lifestyle and luxury, are waiting in the wings for their show to begin. All in all, it certainly promises to be a very exciting year for retail in India.
