Editorial
We need no crystal ball to predict interesting times ahead for Indian Retail. The influx of international players continues…France’s Auchen is keen to set up shop here, as is Woolworth’s, Carrefour and Home Retail. Global brands rub shoulders with growing numbers of store brands and private labels, while the Indian consumer, whose latent demand is far from satiated, hollers for more.
Even today, there are many around the world that simplistically typecast India as an agrarian economy complete with camels, elephants and cows, plus the resident snake charmer. With the tech boom, India became the call center country. Pursuing this train of thought, we think we are well on our way to become a nation of malls.
On a more serious note, development of the sector must be dealt with care, allaying doubts and fears along the way. For instance, Wal-Mart’s entry into India continues to disturb smaller players. This month saw the protest staged by the Federation of Association of Maharashtra (FAM), which opposed the global major’s entry into the country, as they believed it would negatively impact their livelihood.

Reliance, Food Bazaar and Bharti / Wal-Mart may be receiving more media attention, but there is money to be made behind the scenes as well, and some like DCM are cashing in on this. And to prove that India is a unique market, we define Dollar stores as those that sell goods for Rs. 99 ($2)- after all, what’s in a name!
