Among the most popular home furnishings made in India, the floor coverings such as carpets, ‘durries’, prayer rugs, druggets, hooked rugs, and ‘namdhas’ which are embroidered woolen carpets made in India are extremely popular. The durrie remains a favorite and the rapid growth and progress of the floor covering industry in the recent past has resulted in durrie weaving turning into a large industry in India, with the largest handloom centers located in Punjab and Haryana, in cities like Panipat and Ludhiana. In fact, 90% of the durries available in European and American markets are woven in India. The export of carpets from India increased a whopping 42.33%, from US$ 654.32 million in the year 2004-05 to US$ 930.69 million in the year 2006-07. Between April and October 2007, Indian carpet exports reached US$ 404.74 million, making the country the global leader in export of carpets, with a 36% share of the global market.
