The Indian healthcare industry is worth around US$35 billion. It is expected to cross US $75 billion by 2012 and US $150 billion by 2017. Government spending accounts for only 20% and the rest of the 80% comes from the private sector.

Healthcare is booming in India. Development, demographic changes, rising incomes, increasing reach of healthcare insurance and the changing outlook towards healthcare among the Indian population are cited as the reasons for the phenomenal growth. These factors seem to have triggered a demand for healthcare products and services.

The healthcare sector needs investments to sustain the phenomenal growth. A Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) study puts the figure at US $50 Billion per annum for the next 20 years and the Technopak Advisors reports pegs immediate medical infrastructure investment requirements at US$82 Billion. The interesting thing is the government, private sector and foreign investors are competing with each other to invest in the industry. The climate could not have been more ideal for start ups.
