Married Women Have a New Ally in the Battle Against HIV-AIDS
Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh) India, 5th February 2010 –Women’s greatest risk of contracting HIV is through their husbands, according to an August 2009 UNAIDS report entitled, “HIV Transmission in Intimate Partner Relationships in Asia.” The question is, “How can they confront their risk?”
As a part of the response, Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (APSACS) announces the Nivedita teleserial, developed in collaboration with Bangalore-based Avatar Entertainment Private Limited and funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
The story traces the journey of the young protagonist, Nivedita, as she is reunited with her recently widowed childhood friend, Sushila. Nivedita encourages Sushila to seek treatment for her mysterious health problems, and Sushila discovers the shocking truth.
However, Nivedita realizes she may soon be in the same situation unless…she can learn the lessons from Sushila’s experience and confront similar risks in her own life. Nivedita finds that the answers to her dilemma are not simple, but are definitely within reach for women who will try.
The weekly serial Nivedita premiered on 3rd January and has found a solid audience at 7:35 pm Sunday evenings since its debut on the Doordarhsan Saptagiri network.
Viewers not only gain a more accurate picture of their vulnerability, they learn prevention strategies including how to get referrals to government and non-government services to assist women and families at risk.
Such services include the 104 health line, health service providers, the Bhumika women’s helpline, protection officers under the Domestic Violence Act, the Andhra Pradesh State Legal Services Authority, women’s self-help groups, non-government organizations, as well as Anganwadi Centres and the numerous other services of the AP Department of Women Development and Child Welfare.
