Telephone Lines and TV Sets in India and China
Indian Telecommunication industry, is the third largest telecommunication network in the world and the second largest in terms of number of wireless connections. For the past decade or so, telecommunication activities have gained momentum in India. Efforts have been made from both governmental and non-governmental platforms to enhance the infrastructure. The idea is to help modern telecommunication technologies to serve all segments of India’s culturally diverse society, and to transform it into a country of technologically aware people.
Television ownership is growing fast, and it has plenty more room to expand. The current number of television households is about the same as in the United States, though for India that amounts to only about half of the country’s households, compared with 98 percent in the United States.
For every 100 urban Chinese households, there are 130.5 color TV sets. And for every 100 rural households, there are 109 TV sets, either color or black-and-white, SARFT statistics show. What's most enticing to advertisers, though, is the 2000 census figure that put more than one-third of the population, or 455 million Chinese, living in cities where income and consumption are on the rise. For the past five years, China has had more TV sets than the U.S., according to Washington-based environmental group the Earth Policy Institute.
China's telecommunications industry has seen revolutionary transformation and growth over the past three decades. The number of mobile and fixed-line telephone users soared from a mere 2 million in 1980 to a total of more than 800 million in 2007 — the country took the number one rank in the world in the number of telephones. China has been the most successful developing nation in history for spreading telecommunications access at an unparalleled rapid pace.
