Comparison of Broadband Access in India and China
India needs to bridge the urban-rural digital divide by deepening broadband penetration by 40-50% if it wants to increase GDP growth. According to a World Bank Report, a ten percentage-point increase in broadband penetration for an average nation results in an acceleration of economic growth of 1.3 percentage point, High-speed networks have become part of the basic infrastructure of any country enabling growth.
India’s Broadband Policy 2004 targets a total of 20- million broadband connections by 2010, whereas penetration stands at a meagre 6.8-million (Source: TRAI. Industry body CII is pushing a broadband adoption plan with the aim of having 214-million connections by 2014.
China overtook the USA as the largest fixed broadband subscriber market, in 2008. Falling equipment prices, low service tariffs and strong consumer demand for services such as online gaming and file sharing have been some of the reasons behind the impressive growth of broadband. With China gaining 2 Million fixed broadband subscribers per quarter on the USA, China was expected to take the lead. With a 20% household penetration, PC households growing at over 20%, and the cable TV operators poised to jump into the fixed broadband services market, China will continue to pull away from the USA.
