Summary

In spite of the absolute value of the human development indeed (HDI) for India improving from 0.577 in 2000 to 0611 in 2004 and further to 0.619 in 2005, the relative ranking of India has not changed much.

At present, India ranks at 128 among the countries with medium human development out of 177 countries of the world as against 126 in the previous year. Against this backdrop - this powerpoint presentation was developed.

India has one of the largest, most highly diversified economies in the world, but, because of its massive population, it is—in terms of earnings and gross national product (GNP) per capita—one of the poorest countries in the world.

Since independence, India has advocated a mixed economic system in which the government, constitutionally defined as “socialist,” plays a key role as central planner, monitor, patron, director, and producer.

An important member of the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India & China) countries, India in recent years has attracted much interest and investment from foreign concerns.
