Outsourcing is not just another short-term trend; it is now a sizable industry providing employment to millions of people worldwide. As a business model, it has worked well for a number of firms globally as it is all about improving efficiency.

As per the Industry fact sheet published by NASSCOM, the Indian ITES-BPO segment grew at 37% in 2005-06 (ITES-BPO) and the exports are expected to cross US$ 9 billion by end 2007. And India’s exports through software totalled US$ 17.3 billion in 2005-06, a 33% increase over the previous year.

Having said this, the industry is young and still evolving. The Indian BPO sector has its fair share of problems in terms of attrition, attracting and hiring the right talent and staying ahead of competition that is fast catching up.

While outsourcing helps companies reduce costs, focus on core competencies and gain competitive advantage, essential planning and management is critical for any outsourcing process to succeed. An ABCD analysis before outsourcing would help:
Alignment: Is outsourcing the right move for your business?
Business case: Have you taken all costs into consideration?
Culture: Can you bridge the cultural difference between your company and the outsourcer?
Delivery: How will you define success?
