The Infant mortality rate is an important indicator of the health status of any country. India has a dismal record of infant and child health across many of its regions. Even though infant and child mortality rates have been declining over a period of time, a lot more needs to be done in the health sector to improve access to healthcare. Mortality rates are lower as level of mother’s education increases. Also, mortality rates are lower in economically better off population as affordability for better healthcare increases. One of the key targets of the National Rural Health Mission is to bring down the infant mortality rates in India.
