The number of post offices has increased to 1.55 lakh (0.15 million) from just 20,000 in 1947. This is supported by additional 5468 panchayat sanchar offices for rural distribution.

A typical Indian post office serves an area of 21.2 sq km and a population of 7174.

At a comparative level, India Post has better reach than the US (259 sq km, 8000 persons) and Chinese (149 sq km, 19962 persons) postal networks.

Indian postal services have undergone major revamp to beat the competition from private courier companies.
