The public health services in India are practically non functional. The urban population has access to private healthcare services. Unfortunately, the rural population is deprived of even the basic healthcare services. Over the years, the inequities in terms of access to health services have increased between rural and urban Indians as well as the rich and poor.

Preventable diseases are a cause of high levels of mortality and poor health conditions of the rural population.

A report of the National Rural Health Mission has highlighted the need for India to explore new ways to tackle issues with respect to primary health care for its rural population.
